The meeting was opened by Acting President Evelyn Varty, welcoming members, visitors and the Guest Speaker Lucy Dunn, from the Lake District Wildlife Park near Bassenthwaite.
Secretary Sheila Martin read the May minutes. The evening was then followed by Guest Speaker Lucy Dunn, who is involved with a conservation programme at the Lake District Wildlife Park.
Her interests in wildlife conservation have taken her to the Amazon Rainforest Madre de Dios in Peru. This is the home to never-ending forests, winding rivers and abundant wildlife. Lucy spent time in this reserve and refuge for endangered species. She explained how the forest's ecosystem is being destroyed by deforestation, gold mining, tourism, and other development. Her research lasted for five weeks, with three weeks spent on the banding of birds. Her trips back home have involved visits to Scotland and Solway Coast Beach Cleaning Project.
Evelyn gave Lucy a vote of thanks for her interesting and rewarding talk on such an important topic.
The competition, 'An Unusual Hat' was won by Evelyn Varty, with Linda Mumberson in second place.
Pat Harper won the Rainforest Quiz, and Pat Saunders won the raffle.
