Dovenby WI November 2019
November's meeting featured a fascinating talk from Michael Cowen on the 'Yellow Earl' AKA Lord Lonsdale of Lowther Castle.
Famous for his love of the colour yellow, he instigated the Lonsdale Belt for boxing, became the first president of the Automobile Association - hence the yellow badge - and president of the International Horse Show. Once the wealthiest man in Britain, he managed to burn through his incredible wealth with his lavish lifestyle. His affair, with Lily Langtree prompted Queen Victoria to 'let it be known that she expected him to leave the country.' He abandoned Lowther Castle with its hundreds of staff in 1935, following the crash of 1928 and died aged 87 in 1944.
The December Meeting will be the Christmas party.
Meetings are usually held at Bridekirk Dovenby School on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30pm.
